Wiki #31: Ukraine Eggs

Ukraine eggs are sort of like the grown-up version of dyed Easter eggs. They feature intricate design and intense details, in a variety of color, and are used for ornamentation. To create an Ukraine egg, first a small hole must be drilled in each end, in order to remove the yolk and sac. After the egg is hollow it is ready to design. Wax is applied to the egg through a metal tube with a wooden handle, that allows it to smoothly cover the desired surface. The egg is then dipped into the lightest color of dye, much like an Easter egg. The portion under the wax remains undyed, and new layers of wax are added to protect areas of the desired color, allowing the egg to be dyed many times in order to reach the desired design. After the final dyeing, the egg is heated in order to remove the wax, leaving only the beautiful design to be seen. Many of the designs people use in creating Ukraine eggs have a symbolic meaning, as do some of the colors.
