Wiki #19: Petroglyphs

Petroglyphs are pictogram images created by removing layers of rock. Also called rock engravings, petroglyphs were used by prehistoric people to record an event or message. They are not, however, pictographs which are pictogram images painted or drawn onto a rock surface. The term petroglyph comes from the Greek words petro, related to petra meaning "stone", and glyphein meaning "to carve". The petroglyph shown is located in Petroglyph Provincial Park near Peterborough, Ontario and is believed to have been carved by the Algonquian people around 900-1400 CE. This is just one of many petroglyphs located in the park, and this is the traditional belief about when the images were created and who created them.
