Wiki #20: Venus of Willendorf

Venus of Willendorf, or the Woman of Willendorf, is a small statuette carved of oolitic limestone and tinted with red orche (a pigment made from earth). The statuette stands about 4 inches tall, and is estimated to have been carved around 24,000-22,000 BCE. The figure was found in 1908 by Josef Szombathy, near a small village in Austria named Willendorf. The origin of the figure, reason for it being created, cultural significance, and the method by which it was carved are not known for sure. The figure is currently located in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.
