Wiki #28: The Musee du Louvre

The Musee du Louvre, or Louvre Museum in English, is one of the largest and most visited museums in the world, as well as is a historic landmark. Thr Louvre covers 652,300 square feet of Paris land, and is housed in the Palais du Louvre (Louvre Palace) which was originally a fortress constructed in the late 12th century under Phillip II. The museum opened on the 10th of August 1793 and feaured a collection of 537 paintings and 184 objects of art. The collection has since increased to over 35,000 works of art and more than 380,000 objects on display. The museum features eight different curatorial departments of works of art: Egyptian Aniques; Near Eastern Antiques; Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiques; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorive Arts; Painting; and Prints and Drawings. Some of the famouse works at the Louvre include the La Pyramide Inversee, Mona Lisa, and The Coronation of Napoleon.
