Wiki #29: Masquerade Ball
A masquerade ball is an event in which the people attending wear costumes and masks. Often times they are used as a special celebration, as for a wedding or holiday, or can be a fun alternative to a typical festival or dance. The guests, or participants, of the ball dress in elaborate costumes and masks, often trying to hide their identity from other guests. This can then create a fun game, in which the guests try to decipher the identities of each other. Masquerades were a feature of the Carnival season in the 15th century, and were popular in Colonial America. They began to regain popularity in North America in the 1990's.
