A Medina, or Medina quarter, is a distinct section of a city that typically is enclosed by walls and contains narrow, maze like streets. In Arabic "Medina" simply means "town" or "city" and the median is often the old part of the city. Medinas are most common in North Africa cities. Seeing one is an interesting experience because they often contain old palaces, fountains, and mosques, and because the streets are so narrow people travel almost exclusively on foot. The Medina also often contain old fashioned markets where shops, stall, and stands sell a variety of raw materials, fresh foods, and homemade goods. These are a couple of pictures that I took at the Medina in Casablanca, Morocco.
